Whim app combines all means of transport in Antwerp
By the end of this year, the Finnish company MaaS Global will launch a new mobility app ‘Whim’ for Antwerp, enabling people to use of all means of transport such as public transport, taxi’s, bike- and car sharing with a single season ticket. The project was presented by Antwerp alderman for Mobility Koen Kennis in Helsinki on Thursday.
Based on his or her mobility needs, the customer chooses a season ticket that costs from 100 euro to 1.000 euro a month. The average ticket will cost around 300 euro. The customer enters the data of the journey (route and means of transport) into the app Whim and it starts calculating the possibilities. For example take a cab to the railway station, take the train to Antwerp Central Station and then take a shared bike to the final destination.
Antwerp shares our vision
MaaS stands for “Mobility as a Service”. The company is already active in Helsinki and Birmingham and also has plans for Amsterdam. “Antwerp shares our mobility vision and has even more means of transport compared to Helsinki”, Sampo Hietanen, director of MaaS Global, says. “There is good public transportation, car- and bike sharing , taxi’s and in the near future even scooter sharing will be added to the possibilities”.
Hietanen also expects a lot of new jobs will be created indirectly. As people trade in their car for this mobility season ticket, they will make more often use of public transport, taxi’s and car sharing services. At present, MaaS is negotiating competitive prices with the different players.
Antwerp alderman for mobility, Koen Kennis is very pleased MaaS Global will come to Antwerp. “This project will help Antwerp citizens to use different means of transportation. I hope also other players will come to this market to reduce the price of a mobility season ticket”.
