Brussels’ low emission zone effective
In the Brussels metropolitan district the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is effective as from January 1st 2018. The most polluting diesel vehicles will no longer be permitted in the city center. The measure will be installed gradually. As from 2018 all diesel vehicles without Euro standard or with Euro 1 standard will be banned.
More severe following years
The following years the standards will become more severe and also apply to petrol cars without Euro standard or with Euro 1 standard as well as to diesel cars with Euro 2 standard. At this moment already 50 intelligent ANPR cameras able to recognize number plates, of the planned 200 are installed.
350 euro fine
Drivers breaking the LEZ criteria will be fined 350 euro every time they enter the zone. There will be a transitional phase though of nine months, during which drivers will not be fined. They will be verbalized and will get a warning. Only after three months a new fine can incur, allowing drivers to take the necessary steps to comply.
With a few exceptions the measure concerns passenger cars, vans (3,5 ton or category N1 on the certificate of registration), buses and touring cars, whether they were registered in Belgium or abroad.
