Only white and silver cars in Turkmenistan
Turkmeen citizens can freely choose the color of their car… as long as it’s white or silver. Since January 1st the police is picking all colored cars of the roads. People only get their car back when they promise to have it repainted, Chronika Turkmenistan and Radio Azatlik reported, two media organizations with critical coverage on the Central Asian dictatorship.
In 2015 the government already suspended the import of black, blue and red cars. Now it wants to further freshen up the traffic scene. It is clear that president Gurbanguly fancies the color white. Since he was appointed in 2007 he transformed the capital Asghabad into a ‘white city’. Whole residential districts were built with snowy white stones. New palaces were covered with white marble and in the center of the city a white marble rock was erected with a golden statue of himself on a horse on top.
To make the city even more shiny he implemented an official ban on air conditioning on the outside of buildings, even though temperatures in summer can raise up to 40°C.
The president’s color policy already provided Turkmenistan a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the country with the most white marble buildings.
Berdimuhamedow, who himself uses a white limousine or a white horse for transport, never gave any explanation for his color preference, but inhabitants assume that the president is convinced that the color white brings good luck.
