80 kph on French regional roads
As from 1st of July the speed limit on French regional roads will decrease from 90 to 80 kilometer per hour. On Tuesday the new fiercely contested measure was announced by French prime minister Edouard Philippe after a ministerial meeting in Paris. The measure applies to roads without a physical separation of road strips like crash barriers.
Authorities want to decrease the number of fatalities in road accidents. “Speed causes most accidents with injuries on the French roads”, explains Philippe. “In 2016 3.477 people died and the number of lethal accidents has increased the last three years.” The income of possible extra fines by exceeding the new speed limit will be collected in a fund for traffic victims.
The decision for the new speed limit was strongly contested, mobility organizations were furious about it. In Belgium maximum speed on regional roads is 70 km/hour, in Germany 100 km/h.
