Last chance to register yet another car in Singapore
As from February 1st it won’t be possible anymore to register any private car in Singapore, unless another one is scrapped first. The city-state with 5,6 million inhabitants wants to avoid a traffic infarct and won’t allow anymore private cars than today’s 575.000.
Auction for permits
There already was a limitation on registering new cars for some years now, varying from 0,25 to 0,5% per year. On February 1st the total number of cars will be ‘frozen’ and citizens only can get permission for a new car if they give up an old one.
If you don’t own a car yet, you’ll have to wait for somebody else to trade in his. Each month an auction is organized to set the price for such a permit, with prices that can go up as high as the purchase price of the car.
Burial ground cleared
Singapore has a surface of 720 square kilometres. According to the Ministery of Transport 12% of that surface is sacrificed for streets and there is very little room for expansion. Some time ago a burial ground was cleared to create extra room for traffic.
