Social partners agree on ‘cash for car’
Belgian unions and employers have finally but surprisingly agreed on the introduction of the ‘cash for car’ principle, which enables employees to turn in their company cars in exchange for an extra cash salary.
They always had principal objections, because with the extra salary somebody can buy another car and shuffle along in traffic jams. But now they reconcile to the decision.
Why this sudden lack of resistance? Unions and employers always have striven for a complete mobility budget, offering employees a free choice of transport means: a smaller car, a bicycle, a train subscription…
By not rejecting the ‘cash for car’ principle anymore they hope to accelerate the coming of the mobility budget. And being the most popular formula, the ‘cash for car’ system probably will hardly ever be used.
Small detail: at this moment the government does not know yet how this mobility budget will look like…
