Volvo Trucks launches its first full electric truck
Swedish truck builder Volvo Trucks has launched its first full electric 16 tons trucks, serving as a garbage truck for waste processing company Renova and for haulage firm TGM. With a range up to 300 km and working silently it is perfectly suited for a nightly job, Volvo Trucks states.
300 km range
The Volvo FL Electric middle class truck has a 185 kW electric motor and can be equipped with two to six battery packs providing 100 to 300 kWh. Maximum range is theoretically some 300 km. It can be charged in 1 to 2 hours (DC charging) or overnight in 10 hours (AC charging).
Volvo Trucks can lean on the experience of its sister company Volvo Buses that has sold already some 4.000 electrified buses since 2010.
One third of time needed
An electric garbage truck like this can be deployed during the night as it operates silently. Experiences with the Swedish Off Peak City Distribution Project that studied the effects of freight transport in the centre of Stockholm (Sweden) have proven that these trucks can do their jobs in one-third of the time just by avoiding peak hour traffic.
In the Netherlands a number of garbage trucks on hydrogen are driving around already as an alternative.
