Netherlands: ever more over-75 drivers attached to their car
More and more people older than 75 are attached to their car, they also do a lot of kilometres. Today this group of people has grown with one third compared to ten years ago, and therefore is the fastest growing category of car drivers, according to figures of the Central Office for Statistics, (Centraal Bureau voor Statistiek, CBS).
The seniors drove on average 2,7 thousand kilometres per person, or 32% more than ten years ago.
Most important explanation for it? Their freedom. Most of them don’t do ten thousands of kilometres anymore, but they are happy to be able to go wherever they want to go, whenever they want to. They go shopping, visit family and friends without being dependent on someone else. Being mobile as long as possible is very important for them.
Striking detail is that the colour grey is the most popular one for cars in this group of aged people, but also in the category of 18 to 30-year-olds. Of the seniors 45% has a grey car, 29% of young people’s cars are painted grey. The older group usually chooses for a Toyota Yaris, Opel Agila or Renault Mégane Scenic, often higher-seated models, the youngsters prefer a Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Golf or a Peugeot 206.
