Bpost makes inventory of traffic signs

Ten years ago Flemish authorities started creating a data bank for traffic signs for a more effective traffic sign policy but the data bank is out-of-date. Zonhoven therefore wants to make an inventory of all traffic signs on its territory, together with the Belgian mail company, Bpost. Postmen’s cars will be equipped with software and a camera that recognizes traffic signs.
Proliferation of traffic signs
“Traffic signs often are installed on the wrong place, sometimes they are not visible from the road or simply missing”, explains Nick Mols of Geographic Information System (Geografisch Informatie Systeem). “Proliferation of traffic signs has a negative impact on traffic safety.”
Zonhoven has at least 4.200 traffic signs, so listing them manually would be a hopeless task. The municipality is investing 14.520 euro in the project.
