Antwerp launches bicycle courier service Cargo Velo
On Monday, the city of Antwerp introduced its first courier service with delivery bicycles. ©, already operational in Ghent for six years now, expands its activities to the city of Antwerp.
Smart mobility solutions
The company is one of the 18 selected partners of the ‘Slim naar Antwerpen’ project (Intelligent ways to get to Antwerp). Goal is to focus on smart and sustainable mobility solutions in the Antwerp region and the company therefore can count on financial support from the city.
Cargo Velo focuses on express transport and parcel delivery services for companies, entrepreneurs and traders. They have a temporary hub in the Kronenburgstraat in Antwerp, where goods are transferred from vans to the cargo bikes.
“For the time being, the hub will do, but we are already looking for a larger distribution centre at the border of the city”, says Sander Vandenberghe, co-founder of Cargo Velo.
Distribution in the city is only one of the services of Cargo Velo, express service is another. “The bicycle often is faster and more reliable in the city than motorized vehicles”, Vandenberghe says. “We therefore can guarantee strict timings, which is appreciated by medical labs, printing companies, florists and sandwich bars.”
“We’re convinced that we can contribute as an alternative solution for transport and help solving problems, like congested traffic and air pollution”, continues Vandenberghe. “We opt for paid employment for the same reason.”
Antwerp Alderman for Mobility, Koen Kennis (N-VA), is happy with the arrival of Cargo Velo. “Antwerp wants to promote alternative transport, usually for people, but I’m happy this time it’s all about cargo.”
