Employees invest in 15.000 solar panels on Volvo Car Gent’s roof
Flemish Minister of Energy, Bart Tommelein (Open Vld), has installed the first of 15.000 solar panels on the roof of Volvo Car’s factory in Ghent. The 6.000 employees of the factory are given the opportunity to invest in the project.
Carbon-free by 2025
With the energy of the solar panels Volvo Car Gent is able to cover 5,4% of its energy needs. “With this investment we’re coming closer to our ambitious goal to become a carbon-neutral factory by 2025”, says Eric Van Landeghem, senior advisor of Volvo Car.
Green energy provider, Eneco, is installing the solar panels. This is one of the biggest projects of the energy provider. Employees can participate via crowdlending, a six year loan on which they receive a gross return of 4%. Afterwards they will get their initial investment back.
1 million euro
The initiative means a 200.000 euro saving on yearly basis. Volvo Car Gent and Eneco are hoping for a capital of 1 million euro through crowdlending. Minimum deposit is 250 euro.
