Austria: ‘clean electric cars may drive faster’
Austria is introducing a remarkable measure to promote the electric car: in several places where normal petrol and diesel cars have to respect a speed limit of 100 km/hour, electric cars will be allowed to drive at 130 km/hour, as from January 1st.
Th remarkable rule is valid on a total of 440 km or 20% of all Austrian highways. These are environmental zones where speed is limited to 100 km/hour to reduce emissions.
“We want to convince people that it is worth opting for an electric vehicle for several reasons”, explains Sustainability Minister, Elisabeth Köstinger, of the conservative party ÖVP. Next step is to allow electric cars to use bus lanes and to provide them with free parking.
All those measures fit in Austria’s ambition to achieve climate goals. CO2 emissions should be 36% lower by 2030, compared to 2005, and the transport sector should be carbon-neutral to a large extent by 2050.
