Flemish families choose Nissan Leaf as family car of the year
Every year mobility club VAB organizes a family car of the year election and in the category electric and hybrid vehicles the Nissan Leaf was the winner in 2018, followed by the Hyundai Kona EV and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
As Flanders biggest mobility club VAB organizes every year the election of the Flemish Family Car of the Year. Car journalists and (more important) families were invited to test drive in total some 25 cars, divided in 3 categories. This year 19 professional car journalists and 68 families participated in the election.
Nissan Leaf clear winner
In the third category, cars with an alternative propulsion are competing and the maximum price of the participants (all options included) is fixed at 60.000 euro (taxes included). This year it was the new Nissan Leaf that won the trophy.
The families particularly appreciated its looks and its roominess, while they also liked its fine roadholding and its luxurious equipment. On top of that, maybe the most important thing: the price of the Leaf is also mentioned: “you get value for your money”.
The journalists stipulated that this successor of the founder of the modern electric car era is still a very good car, having a homogenous concept and design and a very easy to use e-pedal (one-pedal driving). They also appreciate its roominess and the relatively low price for what you get.
Second place was for the Hyundai Kona EV, where testers appreciated its original looks, its standard equipment and particularly its range, as people can order it with a 64 kWh battery for a still reasonable price.
Third was the Mitsubishi Outlander because of the huge space it offers and because of the possibility of a very frugal way of driving if you do things well. This year the Outlander was the only (plug-in) hybrid in the contest.
Ford also happy
American car manufacturer, Ford, will also be happy. In the two ‘normal’ categories of cars with an internal combustion engine, the new Ford Focus managed to win both. In the price category up to 19.500 euro, the Focus Hatchback was chosen, in the second price category up to 30.500 euro the Focus Clipper (estate version) came out as first. Both are propelled by the famous 1.0 l 3-cylinder Ecoboost petrol engine that already won many awards.
