Volkswagen: ‘last combustion engine car to be sold in 2040’
Volkswagen plans to sell its last cars with combustion engines – petrol or diesel – by 2040, VW’s strategic director, Michael Jost, has told the newspaper Handelsblatt. “The last car to be launched on a traditional platform will be in 2026”, Jost said.
The latter is a condition to reach the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement and the EU to be carbon-neutral by 2050. With a market introduction beginning of the decade starting in 2030 and taking into account that a car model is offered on average for seven years, Jost estimates the last cars with internal combustion engine (ICE) will be sold in 2040.
In November the Volkswagen group has announced to invest 44 billion euro until 2023 into the transition to electric and autonomous cars. Having six versions of electric vehicles in its portfolio today, VW wants to extend this to 50 models by 2025, according to its CEO, Herbert Diess. Volkswagen might be joining forces with Ford on this, as rumoured already beginning last month.
