VW and Ford gearing up to work together
There is a serious possibility that car manufacturers Ford and Volkswagen are planning to join forces on different domains (commercial vehicles but also electric and autonomous cars).
The organizers of the Detroit motor show (NAIAS) have scheduled an important industrial announcement on the 15th of January. Observers think that this is the official announcement of a partnership between Ford and VW on different topics.
Both manufacturers are already talking to each other since the summer last year about an possible collaboration but until now nothing has been revealed how this is going to work and on what fields.
Volkswagen has never hidden its interest for the commercial vehicles of Ford and Ford has never denied talking to VW: “Our protocol agreement with VW covers potential collaboration on several domains, but it’s too early to give details. We’ll do this soon”, commented Jennifer Flake, a Ford spokeswoman.
Sector in turmoil
The car manufacturing sector is struggling: steel and aluminium are costing more (also due to the trade war US-China), there is the competition of Silicon Valley (data, autonomous driving) and big investments are needed for electrification.
A major alliance on certain fields between two car giants could change a lot. Ford recently announced that it won’t sell sedans and small cars anymore in the future (low profit margins) and some analysts think that it will also close factories and license people, like GM is doing.
Volkswagen finally wants to get rid of dieselgate and its consequences (huge fines, image damaged…). It is now determined to go for electrification and the autonomous car but especially for the latter it could use some help fighting Uber, Waymo and others.
