‘Sales of speed pedelecs almost doubled in 2 years’
Last year sales of the fast electric bicycles – the so-called ‘speed pedelecs’ – almost doubled (9.314) compared to 2017 (5.351), according to figures of sector federation, Traxio.
“Reason for this boost in sales is the fact that these vehicles are made fiscally equal before the law to a normal bicycle”, explains Maarten Matienko of mobility organization VAB.
Most owners use those bikes for commuting, as an alternative to the car and to avoid traffic jams. Besides, they get a compensation of 0,23 euro per kilometre.
A speed pedelec needs to be registered like a motorbike. It can achieve a top speed of 45 km/hour. It also needs a number plate and the driver has to wear a helmet.
