American FedEx to test parcel delivery robot
On Wednesday, American FedEx announced that it is going to test a robot to deliver parcels and letters. The ‘SameDay Bot’, as the device is called, will be able to drive on the pavement or along the road, it even can take the stairs.
Tested in Memphis
It is perfectly capable of avoiding obstacles and pedestrians. Top speed is 16 km/hour. It will be tested first in Memphis, the city where FedEx is situated. Local authorities have given green light for it.
“This robot is an important step in history and fits perfectly in our mission”, said Brie Carere in a press release. “We want to find a solution for the problems and costs related to ‘the last mile’ of e-commerce.”
Walmart, Target and Pizza Hut
The idea was to use robots for short-distance deliveries from shops like Walmart, Target and Pizza Hut. Amazon launched a similar initiative recently in the Seattle area, with its robot called ‘Scout’.
Vision Fund of the Japanese SoftBank recently invested 950 million dollar in the American start-up Nuro, specialized in the production of small autonomous delivery vehicles.
