Shell to invest 300 million dollar in afforestation worldwide
The coming three years, Shell is going to invest 300 million dollar in the planting of trees all over the world. As part of the worldwide investment program, Shell will invest 17 million dollar in the country fund of the Dutch Forestry Commission. Both organizations want to plant more than five million trees the coming twelve years. It’s the biggest afforestation of the last hundred years. Shell announced these plans on Monday.
CO2 reduction goals
The worldwide program has to help Shell to meet its CO2 reduction goals. “We invest in off-shore wind energy, solar energy, electric mobility, bio-fuels and energy efficiency but the compensation of CO2 is an important aspect of our climate goals too”, declared Marjan van Loon, president-director of Shell in the Netherlands.
Sylvo Thijsen, director of the Dutch Forestry Commission, is happy with the collaboration of the business world. “With the help from Shell we can fill up the empty spaces in the woods, caused by a, irreparable disease of ash trees.”
Shell will offer Dutch clients at the filling station the possibility to compensate their own emissions. Clients paying one cent more per litre will be driving carbon-neutral.
Compensation via the Dutch woods is not possible yet because the Netherlands don’t have a certified system for CO2 credits yet. However, both parties are going to lobby to get a certification to make investments in Dutch nature more interesting for companies. On top of that, Shell is going to install 200 extra fast chargers for electric cars at its fuel stations.
Clean and green energy
Shell also has (green) plans abroad. The company signed an agreement with Land Life in Spain for an afforestation project of 300 hectare and also in Australia a plant program has started. Earlier this year took over the German Sonnen, a company that developed a home battery, and it acquired Makani, an American start-up of Google’s parent company Alphabet. Makani has developed an airplane to produce electricity.
Shell is investing more and more in clean and green forms of energy. Modest investments, for the time being, but the oil company has announced it has the ambition to double its investments in new forms of energy up to four billion dollar per year.
