Touring: alternatives needed
The alternatives are not yet abundantly available. They could include an extension of the subway system to the city limits and the creation of more park-and-ride areas.
“We have been asking for park-and-ride areas for years, but it is all going too slow“, says Smagghe. “It is fine for people living in Brussels, who have alternative ways of travelling within the city, but Brussels needs to mind commuters from outside the city. They need alternatives.”
Touring feels there is still a lot of public support for the car as a mode of transport. The Region should therefore not take decisions like these hastily under the current climate pressure. “We need to evaluate the impact of the Brussels low emission zone on air quality first”, says Smagghe.
