NMBS/SNCB to cut in opening hours of ticket offices
Belgian public railway company, NMBS/SNCN, is planning to cut in the opening hours of 49 train stations in the country. Some will close at noon on weekdays, others will not be open all weekend. The reason for the measure is the changing behavior of passengers, booking their tickets online.
Last year online sales and sales of vending machines represented two-thirds of total sales. As a consequence, the number of clients at certain ticket offices decreased significantly, and so did the transactions. That is why the NMBS/SNCB will reduce the opening hours of ticket offices as of August 5th. Nothing changes when it comes to the trains, NMBS/SNCB assures.
As far as the changing opening hours, 49 Belgian stations are concerned, of which 22 in Flanders.
The railway union criticizes the ‘new restructuring offensive’ and says the rural regions that already were vulnerable, will be most affected.
