Vias: ‘Most children involved in accidents on Friday evening’
According to recent calculations of traffic safety institute Vias, 17 school children a day are involved in a traffic accident on their way to or from school. Between 2014 and 2018, 35.000 children were involved in a crash, 15.00 of them on their way to or from school.
A remarkable fact is that Friday evening takes the heaviest toll. The risk increases as the week progresses. Fatigue is clearly at stake. On Friday evening, the risk level for an accident is 60% higher than on Monday morning. But also on Wednesday at noon, when all kids leave school at the same time, the risk is higher.
Half of all minors involved in Flanders are cyclists, one in five is a moped rider. Most victims are between 12 and 13 years old. They have the typical age when they first go to school alone. Also, 16- year-olds with mopeds are often involved.
Experts advise different types of road users to leave home or school at different moments, and they call not to use the car. Vias also suggests parents to rehearse the way to school together with their children.
