‘Bike to Work’ app shows fastest or safest way
Now that holidays are over, the Cyclist’s Union (Fietsersbond, FB) introduces a brand-new app called ‘Bike to Work’. “The app allows commuters to calculate the fastest or best route to work,” explains project manager Wim De Groof. “But school children can also use it to find the safest way to school. They will be guided then via low-traffic streets.”
Bike to Work is meant to make cycling to school or work more accessible. The app is also interactive: cyclists can, for instance, report a closed road or an accident. This information will immediately be shared with the other app users. This way, FB wants to better inform all cyclists about specific cycling circumstances or dangerous situations.
The roads are charted by volunteers, often by bike. That is why the map shows more detailed cycling information than Google Maps. All roads are split up in segments, and every street gets a safety score. This way, the app can indicate the safest route.
“The app was developed for employees but maybe we will make a special version for school children in the future,” De Groof continues. “It can also be used as a navigation system.”
“Some parents might combine several routes: they will first drop their children at the school gate and then cycle to work,” says Wies Callens of FB.
People can also stimulate their employers to participate in the initiative. After all, it can be to their advantage too because cycling employees are healthier, more productive, and less stressed. Employees, in their turn, will be rewarded with bicycle points, free products, and reductions. They can count on tips and tricks to make cycling even more fun.
Callens hopes that the popularity of the bicycle keeps on growing, just like during the lockdown.
