‘Domestic tasks, unsafety, and lack of comfort keep women from cycling’
The use of the bicycle is on the rise in Brussels, but only 36% of cyclists in 2019 were female. Mobility organization Brussel Mobiliteit asked the research department of ProVelo to find out why women are reserved with the use of the bike.
Apparently, there are three main reasons why women are reluctant to use the bicycle: first of all, the domestic and family-related tasks, unsafety, and comfort. Women execute most domestic functions in the family. Only 5% of all shopping trips by bike have several intermediate stops, and 23% of female cyclists consider the transport of children an inhibitory factor.
The study also shows that women develop an increased perception of the risks and potential dangers of cycling in an urban environment. Women who hardly use the bicycle say that unsafety (54%) and the lack of comfort (47%) are the main reasons for not using the bike. Those who are regular cyclists, on the contrary, hardly mention those reasons.
Others also find it difficult to combine cycling with elegance and femininity. Next year, the Brussels Region will organize a large sensitizing campaign for the female target group. Starting female cyclists can already get guidance and specific training.
