MD LeasePlan: ‘Emission-free driving is possible within 5 years’
Johan Portier, the Managing Director of LeasePlan Belgium, is outspoken: “Politicians have no vision when it comes to mobility. Emission-free driving can be realized within the next five years.”
And he continues: “Now is the moment to act. I hope the politicians will be recovering from their lethargy and finally show some common sense.”
“Ask a politician nowadays about his vision of mobility in the long term. What’s his ambition regarding mobility? Does he have a mobility plan, and what are the steps to take? How many charging points will there be in 2030? Unfortunately, they will answer that they have no idea!”
The LeasePlan director is happy with the decision that in the future, only cars that don’t emit greenhouse gases will be 100% tax-deductible. “It’s a good start for a larger debate on mobility. This has to go further than producing oneliners like ‘abolish the company car’.”
“Having a penetrating debate on mobility is having a debate about the future of society. We will talk about teleworking, traffic-free zones, moving closer to work, etc.”
In the long term
According to Portier, it’s of utmost importance that the politicians have or at least develop their long-term vision now.
“How many charging points do we want in Belgium, and when and where do we want them? Which infrastructure is needed? Who will realize this, and how, and when shall it be realized? How can we be assured that as many people support the necessary transition as possible?
About the future of the car, Portier looks very sure and convinced: “The future of the car will be electric, shared, and autonomous.” For sure, Portier wants LeasePlan to be part of it when it happens.
A month ago, LeasePlan Belgium delivered 30 Polestar 2 EVs to its company staff. By ordering these, more than 60% of its fleet is already electric. By doing so, it also wants to guide its customers into the transition to emission-free driving.
