E17 dynamic road signs to give real-time info on truck parking
Five highway parking lots along the E17 between Ghent and Courtrai will be equipped with road signs informing truck drivers about the occupation rate. This way, they can choose a more quiet place to get some sleep. Flemish Minister for Mobility, Lydia Peeters (Open Vld), hopes the measure will better spread the number of trucks along the highways.
The information about the occupation rate in the direction of France will be followed in real-time. It will be indicated via the dynamic road signs above the highway and via Be-Mobile’s Truckmeister app.
More truck traffic
“Today, truckers don’t know whether there is a free parking place on one of the parking lots,” Peeters explains. “This creates over-occupation while there may be free places on one of the next parking lots.”
The stretch of the E17 between Ghent and Courtrai is one of the busiest highways for truck transport. While car traffic was 17% lower at the beginning of October, truck transport was 1% up on the Flemish highways.
