SD Worx: ‘One in five already have a company bike in Antwerp and Limburg’

According to a recent survey by Belgian HR service provider SD Worx, in the provinces of Limburg and Antwerp, almost one in five employees already have a company bicycle, and these SMEs also intend to expand their company bicycle fleet by 9% and 8% in 2024 or 2025, respectively.

West Flanders currently ranks third, but it is also the province where most SME companies plan to introduce company bicycles. Today, 16% of West Flemish SMEs already offer company bicycles, and in 2024 and 2025, one in five SMEs in West Flanders (with a maximum of 250 employees) will provide their staff for the first time with company bicycles.

Little interest in Flemish Brabant

On the other hand, Flemish Brabant shows the slightest interest: only 5% of SMEs plan to start with company bicycles, while less than 14% currently offer them.

A company bicycle is an important asset in attracting and retaining talent,” explains Annelies Rottiers, SME advisor at SD Worx. A company bicycle is awarded on top of the salary package, and the average bicycle allowance for SMEs, introduced in 2023, is 31 euro cents per kilometer cycled. “For example, for those who cycle to work ten times and pedal a total of 20 km per day, this amounts to 62 euros net.”

Bicycle allowance

In many sectors, anyone who comes to work with his own bicycle also receives a bicycle allowance. By 2023, approximately 40% of SMEs with over 20 employees had introduced the allowance.

SMEs in East Flanders are leading the way: almost one in three have switched to granting a bicycle allowance, compared to only 12% in Brussels.
