Polestar’s SUV coupé 4 has finally hit the European streets. After presenting the model in the Spring of 2023, followed by the launch of production back in November and the sales launch in China, European customers are now getting their hands on Polestar’s latest model, expanding the model range up to three choices.
2024 didn’t start great for Polestar. The Swedish-Chinese brand, related to Volvo and part of the Geely empire, had to face delays for its large SUV, the Volvo EX90-based Polestar 3. And with the Polestar 4 not ready yet for a global launch, the Polestar 2 saloon had to pull the train on its own for a little longer.
From one to three models in a few months
Now, though, Polestar’s model range has tripled. The 3 finally launched earlier this summer, while the Polestar 4 has started being delivered to European customers. “With Polestar 3 on the road since this summer, this is the next important milestone for us in 2024 as we make our first European deliveries of Polestar 4 and give our customers even more choice,” says Polestar’s CEO Thomas Ingenlath.
The Polestar 4 is described as an SUV coupé but could also be characterized as a larger version of the 2. Like the Zeekr 001 and Volvo EM90/Zeekr 009, it is based on Geely’s SEA platform. It features a 102 kWh battery (94 kWh net) and the choice between Single-Motor and Dual-Motor drivetrains, with a WLTP range of 620 and 590 km, respectively.
It is also Polestar’s fastest model to date, or at least until the Porsche Taycan-rivalling near 900 hp Polestar 5 sports saloon launches in 2025. The Polestar 4 Dual Motor features 544 hp, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/hour in just 3.8 seconds.
However, the Polestar 4’s most striking feature is its lack of a rear window. This design choice was made to improve chassis stiffness, a feature that was subsequently copied by Huawei’s Avatr 12. On the inside, the Polestar 4 moves away from Volvo’s influence and features an extensive, 15.4-inch horizontal Android infotainment system.
From €63,500
The Polestar 4’s prices in Belgium start at €63,500 for the Long Range Single Motor and €71,500 for the Dual Motor. Pre-configured models are also available at a slightly lower price and can be delivered in early September.
The Polestar 4 is currently being produced in China, but a second production location in South Korea, in a previous Renault-Samsung facility, will open in 2025. The Polestar 3, meanwhile, will also be built alongside the Volvo EX90 in South Carolina, US, to avoid Chinese import tariffs in both the US and Europe.
