Opel is bringing a hydrogen fuel cell variant of its sizeable electric van, the Movano Electric, to the IAA Transportation in Hannover. It features a range of around 500 km, 5-minute refueling, and no compromise on the payload or cargo capacity. It will be built in-house at Stellantis’ Gliwice plant in Poland.
Earlier this year, Stellantis announced it would start producing its hydrogen mid-size and large vans in-house at its Hordain (France, mid-size vans) and Gliwice (Poland, large vans) plants. Now, Opel is the first to officially announce its hydrogen fuel cell-powered large van, the Movano Hydrogen.
500-km range, 5-minute refueling
Opel has yet to reveal the Movano Hydrogen’s looks, although a photo showing the complete Stellantis large FCEV van was previously released from the factory. Likewise, the fuel cell and hydrogen tank specifications will remain a secret until the IAA Transportation later this month.
We know that the large hydrogen van will have a range of around 500 km, which can be replenished in under five minutes at a hydrogen fuel station (of which there are few).
An 11 kWh battery buffers starting, hard acceleration, and recuperating brake energy. The front wheels are powered by a 110-kW (150-hp) and 410 Nm electric motor.
Smaller payload, same cargo space
The Movano Hydrogen makes some compromises in terms of cargo space and payload. It still has up to 17 m³ ample cargo space, but the payload is limited to 1,370 kg, compared to 1,500 kilograms of the Movano Electric and 2 tons for the diesel-powered Movano.
The Opel Movano Hydrogen will debut at the IAA Transportation in Hannover from 16 to 22 September 2024. The model’s availability for sale is still unknown.
