The Belgian postal company Bpost recently ordered 168 new bike trailers, bringing the total to more than 600 vehicles. Postmen can use them to deliver parcels. The new e-bike trailers, which can accommodate up to fifty parcels and letters and a maximum weight of 150 kilograms, will be delivered in 2025. By 2030, all deliveries should be emission-free.
Bicycle deliveries relieve traffic, help avoid traffic jams, do not take up parking spaces, and do not cause noise pollution. Compared to a diesel van, they also save 1.7 tons of CO2 per year. All Bpost e-bike trailers together save 588 tons of CO2 per year.
By 2030, all deliveries should be emission-free. Today, Bpost ensures emission-free delivery in fifteen so-called ‘ecozones’: Antwerp, Mons, Bruges, Brussels, Eupen, Hasselt, Courtrai, Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Malines, Namur, Ostend, Seraing, Sint-Niklaas, and Verviers.
Eco-zones
The so-called ‘ecozone’ was first introduced in Louvain in 2022 and proved successful. Since its introduction, parcels, newspapers, and letters have been delivered emission-free, reducing CO2 emissions by 88% per parcel compared to 2018.
The ecozone in Louvain officially started in April 2022 as an initiative of the city and the Belgian Post Group Bpost. Bpost, therefore, used 13 bicycle trailers, 46 electric vans, and an extensive network of 27 collection points (including post offices) with a total of 624 parcel lockers.
In June 2024, one year after Bpost put its thousandth electric delivery van into use, the Belgian postal company surpassed the 2,000 electric vehicle mark. At that time, Bpost’s fleet consisted of 10,754 vans, of which 2,000 were electric vans, and more than 5,000 bicycles, of which about 2,500 were e-bikes. By the end of this year, more than 500 electric vans and trucks will be added.
