Dutch fast-charging chain Fastned is partnering with Transport for London (TfL), the local government body responsible for most of the London transport network, to establish 25 fast-charging plazas in and around the British capital by 2030.
Fastned is setting up a joint venture with Places for London, TfL’s real estate daughter, to invest £16 million (€19,3 million) in the first five locations along busy routes in Hanger Lane, Canning Town, Hatton Cross, Tottenham Hale, and Hillingdon Circus.
70 fast chargers up to 400 kWh
These locations will add more than 70 fast chargers (up to 400kW) to London‘s EV charging network, with each node serving hundreds of drivers per day, Fastned says. On average, EVs can recharge up to 300 km of range in 15 minutes.
London City has 21,600 charging points to date, about a third of all EV charging infrastructure in the UK and more than any other region.
London is leading the way in electric vehicle use in the UK, with around 193,000 plug–in electric cars and vans already registered in the capital.
According to Fastned, the number of electric vehicles on the road in London is expected to increase to 1 to 1.4 million by 2030. This equates to 34% to 49% of London’s car and van fleet. Up to 4,000 fast chargers will be needed to meet this demand.
Investing £30 million
The Dutch company plans to invest over £30 million (€36.2 million) in the next six years to accomplish 25 plazas with Places for London by 2030. The deal leaves the opportunity to expand to 65 later if market conditions allow.
In 2019, Fastned opened the first fast–charging station in the United Kingdom, in Sunderland. The UK network stretches from Cornwall to Fife and currently includes 27 charging points, with 151 fast chargers.
