Austrian transport company Hödlmayer has put its first electric truck for car transport into operation, transporting vehicles for Magna Steyr in Graz. This Mercedes eActros 300 is also Austria’s first electric car transporter, a type of transport where electrification is still rare.
On January 9, 202, Hödlmayer first started using its Mercedes eActros 300 with a Kässbohrer trailer to transport vehicles from Magna Steyr’s car factory in Graz to its own logistics site, around 4 km away. From there, the cars are sent around the world via different means of transport, including rail.
Charging between shifts and overnight
The route between both sites has been analyzed and calculated to achieve optimal uptime. There is a one-hour charging break between production shifts and an overnight charge to have a full battery the next day. Hödlmayer has also installed a Siemens fast charging station to accommodate its first electric car transporter, which ranges around 300 km.

“This project has once again shown that we can also rely on our partners. I would like to thank Daimler Truck, the superstructure manufacturer Kässbohrer, and the charging infrastructure provider Siemens for their successful collaboration. Together, we have taken an important first step towards sustainable vehicle logistics,” CEO Johannes Alexander Hödlmayr explains.
Very few electric car transport trucks on the road
Electric car transporters are still a rarity on the road. Only in 2023, Scania unveiled the first all-electric car transporter, a P 25 model with, again, a Kässbohrer body, which was put into operation by German logistics company ARS Altmann Automobillogistik. In 2024, electric truck conversion specialist Designwerk unveiled an electric car transporter with a battery capacity of up to 1,000 kWh.
