Genk ‘worst train station’ regarding punctuality

Nowhere is train traffic less punctual than in Genk (Flanders) and Rixensart (Wallonia). In 2024, NMBS/SNCB scored an overall punctuality score of 90%. That is, nine out of ten trains arrived at their destination “with less than six minutes delay”.

However, Genk’s punctuality rate is only 75.7%. One in four trains arrives in Genk with at least six minutes’ delay. One reason for the delay in Genk is that the Brussels-Genk route near Landen still has only one train track in 2025, quickly leading to delays.

Rates below 80% are also recorded in Noorderkempen (Brecht, 76.4%), Hamont (77.3%), Overpelt (77.9%), and Lommel (78.3%). Hasselt scores 80.5%.

Lower parts of the country

In Walloon Brabant, Rixensart is the ‘worst station’ in terms of punctuality. Last year, 87.3% of trains arrived on time. In Wallonia, trains are the most late in Ghlin (Mons section), with a punctuality rate of 77.8% in 2024.

The Braine-l’Alleud, Nivelles, Tubize, Waterloo, and Ottignies stations, on the other hand, have a rate of around 90%, which is superior to the major Brussels stations (Central, North, Midi), whose punctuality is less than 88%.

Prize for punctuality

The Bierges-Walibi stop is the most punctual station in Walloon Brabant, with a rate of 96.6%, one of the best in the country. The national prize for punctuality is awarded to the station in Erpe-Mere, near Aalst, in Flanders, with 98% of trains without delay.
