Volvo Cars has added a ‘Cross Country’ version to its EX30 electric model portfolio. The new version uses the same all-wheel drive as the top model but comes with unique accessories and more ground clearance.
The Volvo EX30 Cross Country is based on the top-of-the-range Ultra equipment line and features the familiar all-wheel drive with two electric motors and 315 kW of power. The carmaker promises to take the EX30 out of the city and to the trail as a new cross-country variant with “an adventurous package.”
In Germany, the EX30 Cross Country is now available to order for €57,290, 2,000 euros more than the current top-of-the-range Ultra version with all-wheel drive. According to Volvo, deliveries are due to start later in the spring. The price in the Belux is unknown yet. The current top model is sold for €55,260.
Cross-country experience
Special features of the off-road EX30 variant include a chassis with an increased ground clearance of 190 millimeters, wheels in a five-spoke cross-country design, and a matt black exterior look. Underride protection at the front and rear and widened wheel arches emphasize the robust look.
According to Volvo, special 18-inch off-road tires, load carriers, a roof basket, and mud flaps are also available as accessories. These extras can also be ordered as a complete ‘Cross Country Experience’ package. According to the manufacturer, further offers will follow at a later date.
The newcomer’s color palette includes four exterior paint finishes, each with a black contrasting roof as standard. Inside, the model has many (partly familiar) storage compartments. Standard equipment includes heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.
All-wheel-drive, 427 km range
The drive system remains the same as the regular top-of-the-range Ultra model. In addition to the system output of 315 kW in total for both the front and the rear electromotor, the electric vehicle has a battery with a net capacity of 64 kWh on board, which should provide a range of 427 kilometers (WLTP).
The all-wheel-drive vehicle sprints from zero to 100 kph in 3.6 seconds, and it can be charged with (maximum) 153 kW DC electric power or 22 kW AC.
As already known, the EX30 is no longer based on a Volvo chassis but on the SEA platform from the parent company, Geely. That means the EX30 uses the same drive technology as the Smart #1 or Zeekr X.
The basic EX30 with a single motor and a 49 kWh LFP battery costs €40,590 in Belgium. Like the other EX30 variants, the Cross Country will be built at the Chinese plant in Zhangjiakou and will soon roll off the production line at the Belgian plant in Ghent.
Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars, emphasizes the Swedish brand’s tradition of cross-country variants in its portfolio: “We launched our first Cross-Country car over 25 years ago, and this concept of durable and all-weather cars is core to the Volvo brand.”
Winters in Scandinavia can be harsh, but they make the best of them: “Even when it’s minus 20 Celsius outside. That’s why we want to deliver a fully rounded experience, not simply a car, to our EX30 Cross Country customers.”
Not just a car
“We think that ‘Cross Country’ should be an experience, not just a car, so alongside the EX30 Cross Country, we’re also launching a new experience package for customers who buy the car, with access to accessories, gear, and information aimed at giving them the full potential to explore the great outdoors,” adds the press release.
Cross Country owners will benefit from an array of bespoke offers. Think of a dedicated, discounted ‘Cross Country Experience’ accessories package. “We know that more and more people are seeking ways to get closer to nature,” says Jim Rowan. “This is why, with our new Cross Country Experience, we aim to create an entire ecosystem around those models, supporting our customers as they embrace adventure.”
An example of this ‘special experience’ is Volvo’s unveiling of the new EX30 Cross Country from a secluded winter cabin in the north of Sweden earlier this week, underlining the essence of an authentic cross-country experience.
The unique cabin is now available for rent from 21 February to 21 March 2025 through Landfolk, renowned for its handpicked holiday homes across Scandinavia and southern Europe.
Each booking allows for up to two nights in this escape. It’s about an hour’s drive from Luleå airport to the cabin. A new Volvo EX30 will be waiting for the hirer at the airport.
