Belgium greenlights flying autogiros and ultralight helicopters

Belgian legislation on ultralight motorized aircraft (ULMs) had been renewed after 26 years. This also makes it possible to fly ultralight helicopters and autogiros in Belgium, the Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport reports.

The maximum allowable mass of a ULM will also be increased. The new regulations better reflect today’s reality.

ULM is an ultralight-powered aircraft with up to two seats. The legislation already includes ULM aircraft and delta wings, which the pilot controls by shifting the center of gravity. The new Royal Decree also includes ultralight helicopters and autogiros in the legislation.

Easier to apply for a license

Autogiros or gyrocopters are like helicopters, but the single rotor or multiple rotors, which rotate freely around nearly vertical axes, are not powered by an engine. Instead, they are set in motion by the air flowing past, which creates the lifting force.

In addition, the maximum allowable mass of ULMs will be increased to 650 kg, and ULMs will also be able to tow gliders into the air. Unlike the old towing aircraft, the smaller ULM aircraft are more environmentally friendly and quieter.

It will also be easier to apply for a license. For example, it no longer needs to be used every two years, and the training requirements to fly a ULM will be adjusted.

Modern approach

Koen Milis, director general of the Directorate General of Aviation at the FPS Mobility, speaks of a “modern ULM regulation that is fully adapted to current times and needs.” It is “aligned with our neighboring countries but specifically adapted to the unique Belgian context.” He hopes this will increase the number of ULM aircraft on the Belgian registry.

“The new Royal Decree allows for a more modern approach to ULM flying,” says Guy Wauters, the Belgian ULM Federation president. “The decision considers adaptations and evolutions in Europe and offers a good start toward the future.”

The legislation will be implemented gradually. Apropos, Belgium has two manufacturers marketing ULM helicopters: the Nivelles-based Dynali and D-Motor from Deerlijk. Germany’s AutoGyro, in turn, is the world leader in the innovation, production, and distribution of gyroplanes.
