Flanders granted 18,543 premiums totaling €72.8 million for EVs

Flanders has distributed 18,543 premiums for electric cars, totaling 72.8 million euros. Most premiums were paid to private individuals—14,637 for new vehicles (under €40,000) and 3,141 for second-hand ones. In addition, 523 premiums went to non-profit organizations and foundations and 242 to car-sharing providers.

The previous Flemish Mobility Minister, Lydia Peeters (Open Vld), introduced the premium to encourage individual buyers to buy electric, the market being (over)dominated by the purchase of EVs in the company car segment.

72,8 million euros

The premium – 5,000 euros for a new electric car and 3,000 euros for a used one – could be applied for since February last year. The premium would remain available until the end of 2024.

However, the number of EV premium requests soon surpassed 11,700, doubling the initial budget (20 million euros) Lydia Peeters had estimated. Ultimately, 72.8 million euros was spent.

Record registrations

Therefore, the new Mobility Minister, Annick De Ridder (N-VA), wanted to end the premium “as soon as possible,” preferably before the end of the year. The final date was determined as November 23rd, 2024.

Thanks to the premium, 127,922 new EVs were registered in Belgium and Luxembourg in 2024, 37.3% more than the year before and a new record.
