The Zeeland Bridge will close for eight weeks next year. The part of the bridge that opens to ships, the so-called ‘bascule bridge,’ will be renovated, and the road surface will be renewed simultaneously.
The Zeeland Bridge is an impressive structure that spans more than five kilometers. It was officially inaugurated in December 1965 and was the longest bridge in Europe then.
Maintenance
However, the bridge is approaching the end of its lifespan, and TU Delft has started a study into what should be done. In the meantime, regular maintenance, which will occur next year, is needed to extend service life and ensure safety.
The works will be carried out between September and December 2026. The bridge’s movable steel parts will be renewed, and the road surface over the entire length will be renewed. During maintenance, traffic must detour via the N57 and the A4.
Zierikzee-Kats
The Zeeland Bridge is a vital traffic artery for Zeeland. It connects Schouwen-Duiveland (Zierikzee) and Noord-Beveland (Colijnsplaat). It also replaced the former ferry service between Zierikzee and Kats.
