Major construction works at 43 locations on Flemish highways in 2025

In 2025, Flanders plans construction works at 43 locations on the highway. Just like last year, much attention will again be paid to renovating bridges, viaducts, and tunnels. Twenty of the 43 construction sites are essential for renewing or replacing bridges or tunnels.

The sites with the most significant impact on traffic are in Antwerp, Flemish Brabant, and East Flanders. According to Mobility Minister Annick De Ridder (N-VA), these gigantic construction sites will cause a lot of inconvenience. However, the construction sites will improve road safety and the lifespan of the infrastructure of the Flemish highways.

A ‘special’ construction site is situated in West Flanders, with the “conversion of the N49 expressway Antwerp-Knokke into a full-fledged highway”. The reason is that the N49 is strategically important for military transports from the port of Zeebrugge toward the country’s interior.

Military transport

Part of the construction works relate to military scaling up. In 2028, a new European plan for so-called military mobility will start. Some roads will be reinforced for military transport.

Several roads around Antwerp will be tackled after 2028 to enable heavy military transport. This is now being accelerated in the context of the war in Ukraine. However, that does not happen with Flemish money. European resources will finance such works.

Nights and weekends

To limit the inconvenience caused by the work, the timing has been discussed with local authorities, mobility, and employers’ organizations. The work will mainly occur at night and during weekends and holidays.

With a new national campaign via radio, social media, and posters, the Roads and Traffic Agency (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer, AWV) are calling on the general public to inform themselves about the planned works in their neighborhood, not only on highways but also on regional roads.

By knowing where the work is carried out, road users can avoid surprises and possibly adjust their journey. The AWV website provides an overview of the 43 construction sites announced. All information can be found at: wegenenverkeer.be.

The 43 sites cost almost one billion euros, but they are essential due to the high traffic pressure in Flanders, the logistical heart of Europe. “Our infrastructure makes our region run, and our people work, and that infrastructure needs to be safe and robust,” De Ridder concludes.
