MobilityPlus: ‘26% of employees hardly charge at home’

According to charging station operator MobilityPlus, a quarter of all employees with an electric car hardly ever charge their company car at home. Nevertheless, employees with electric company cars usually have a charging station at home. But most fear that charging at home will drive up their energy bill.

MobilityPlus discovered that 26 percent of charging points at employees’ homes are used no more than three times a month. In addition, the average charging volume at employees’ homes is decreasing month after month. In January, the average charging capacity at home was around 330 kilowatt hours (kWh), while in March, this dropped to just over 280 kWh.

Energy bill

“Not surprising,” insiders say. Many e-car drivers fear the impact of home charging on their energy bill, especially since the introduction of the capacity tariff, which is calculated based on your monthly consumption peak. Another explanation for the decline in home charging is the introduction of the new flat-rate tariff to reimburse charging costs.

Most companies reimburse their employees with an electric car a lump sum for the charging costs because the actual cost calculation is far too complex and depends on many factors, like the energy contract, the time of charging, the capacity rate, and the presence of solar panels. The tax authorities also allow this – temporarily, at least.

Charging at home is the most cost-effective

Charging at home may seem less attractive, so many employees are increasingly ‘filling up’ at public charging stations. However, charging at home – if done smartly and correctly – is the most cost-effective solution for employees and employers.
