Scania acquires Northvolt’s heavy industry department

Swedish truck manufacturer Scania has acquired Northvolt’s Systems Industrial Division, the bankrupt battery manufacturer’s heavy industry and off-road battery systems division. The 260 employees based in Sweden will transfer to Scania’s Power Solutions division, which develops powertrains for industrial, marine, and power generation purposes.

Northvolt, the Swedish battery manufacturer once hailed as Europe’s answer to China and South Korea’s dominance in EV battery production announced its bankruptcy in March 2025 and has since slashed its workforce in half under the administration procedure. Now, another part of the company is being sold off to Scania.

Batteries for industry and off-road applications

Northvolt Systems Industrial was established by Northvolt in 2018 and currently employs approximately 300 people in a battery systems prototyping facility in Stockholm, Sweden, and Northvolt’s production facility in Gdańsk, Poland.

It develops battery modules and systems for material handling, construction equipment, mining, agriculture, and municipal services and has already delivered products to customers.

In February, Northvolt already announced that an unnamed “leading industrial group” had agreed to buy the division. Scania has announced its involvement, adding the former Northvolt division to its Power Solutions business unit.

Complementary to Scania’s diesel Power Solutions

To date, Scania’s Power Solutions has focused mainly on developing diesel engines for non-truck applications such as construction, agriculture, power generation, and logistics. With the acquisition of Northvolt Systems Industrial, Scania can now start offering battery-powered solutions to its customers.

“Northvolt Systems Industrial Division brings valuable expertise in battery technology and assembly. Their capabilities strengthen our modular approach and support the development of complete electrified solutions for off-road applications. I’m pleased to welcome the team to Scania,” says Sara Hermansson, Head of Scania Power Solutions.

As part of the agreement, Scania promised that the deal would ensure the continuation of operations, meaning that the Northvolt Systems Industrial team would remain intact and continue working in Sweden and Poland. The purchase price has not been disclosed.
