MAN starts battery production in Nuremberg, invests €150 million extra

MAN launched battery production at its Nuremberg (Germany) site on Friday, April 11th. The company also announced an extra investment in battery and diesel engine production to secure the factory’s long-term future and prepare for the launch of the series production of its trucks in June.

After investing around €100 million in the Nuremberg production site to prepare for battery production, MAN has now announced a further €150 million investment in battery technology. This investment not only includes development but also enables the Nuremberg site to produce the battery modules used in the packs.

Total investment of half a billion euros

In addition to the €250 million total investment in battery technology and production, MAN is investing another €250 million in the Nuremberg factory to develop “state-of-the-art diesel technology.” MAN recently launched the new D30 PowerLion driveline and expects to use it well into the 2030s.

This total investment of €500 million secures the future of the Bavarian production site. “With the start of battery production, the company that invented the diesel engine is entering a new era. We are very proud of what we have created here in Nuremberg and what will continue to be created,” says MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp.

“MAN has successfully transformed itself from a former site for pure diesel engines into a state-of-the-art battery production site for electric trucks. Bavaria is and will remain an automotive state – also in the commercial vehicle sector.

Following initial funding of 30 million euros in 2022 for research and development, the Free State is supporting the future production of battery modules with almost six million euros,” adds Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder, who was also present at the launch of battery production.

Up to 100,000 packs per year

Currently, the Nuremberg site can produce up to 50,000 battery packs per year, but with the additional investment and the new M50 building, that figure can be scaled up to 100,000 units per year if the demand for battery-electric commercial vehicles is there.

MAN’s NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries come in three form factors: a flat form factor for the electric city bus MAN Lion’s City E, while the MAN eTGL, eTGS, and eTGX eTrucks use two higher and shorter form factors.

The eTrucks will enter series production in June 2025, after an initial pre-series run of around 100 vehicles for real-world testing by customers in Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.
