Omoda 9 SHS is a 450-hp hybrid SUV for a (relatively) low price

Omoda, a Chinese group Chery’s sub-brand, is expanding its range with the new flagship Omoda 9 SHS. The mid-sized SUV features a range-extended electric drivetrain with nearly 450 hp, a total driving range of over 1,100 km, and a luxurious interior, all for less than an entry-level BMW X3.

Omoda was established as a brand in 2022, at the same time as its sister brand Jaecoo. It has clear international ambitions, not only in Europe but also in Russia, where many Western and Japanese brands have stopped sales since the war in Ukraine. Omoda arrived in Belgium in 2024 with the Omoda 5, a compact SUV with both gasoline and electric drivetrains.

Super Hybrid System

A second model has now hit European shores, although the UK is the first to get this new flagship: the Omoda 9 SHS. It features Chery’s ‘Super Hybrid System’, with powerful electric motors, a large battery (for a plug-in hybrid), and a combustion engine that acts as a range extender.

The numbers are pretty good: three electric motors deliver a total of 449 hp, while the 34.46 kWh battery offers 150 km of EV range and can fast-charge up to 65 kW. Add the 1.5-liter gasoline engine, and the total range increases to over 1,100 km. 0-100 km/h takes just 4.9 seconds.

Fully kitted out as standard

On the inside, too, the 4.77-meter-long Omoda 9 looks to pamper its occupants. At the front, there’s a large, 24.6-inch curved display and heated, ventilated, and massaged seats. A Sony surround sound system, including speakers in the headrests, provides the beats, while a 1.3-meter sunroof gives passengers some natural light.

The price for all of this is £44,900 in the UK or €52,800 at the current exchange rates, with no additional options available to increase that price tag. Deliveries will begin in June 2025, although it is unclear when the Omoda 9 will become available in Continental Europe.
