In April, the number of registrations of new speed pedelecs increased slightly by +0.3% to 1,150 units, and more growth is emerging thanks to additional registrations by federal civil servants and education staff.
“The wider access to bicycle leasing for government staff will have an even more positive impact on the figures in the coming months,” explains Filip Rylant, spokesperson for mobility federation Traxio. Most new speed pedelecs (62%) are leased bicycles, representing an increase of almost 20% compared to last year.
Circular product
At the same time, the second-hand market of speed pedelecs continues to grow strongly. In April 2025, 829 used vehicles were registered, an increase of +18.8% compared to the same period in 2024.
Used speed pedelecs are largely registered by private individuals, who often buy second-hand models that become available through leasing. A well-maintained second-hand copy can have a second or even third life; consumers know this and are happy to buy this circular product.
Flemish phenomenon
Between 2023 and 2025, the share of the second-hand market increased from 25.9% (1,949 units) to 27.2% (2,719 units), an increase of at least 43.6%. Registrations of new and second-hand speed pedelecs indicate that the super-fast bike is extremely popular.
Speed pedelecs are a typical Flemish phenomenon, while sales have declined by 44% in Wallonia. When traffic jams increase, sales of alternative transport increase.
Market is dominated by leasing
The lease segment grew by an impressive 19.1% compared to 2024: from 2,400 units in 2024 to 2,859 in 2025. The private registrations segment fell by -26.8%, from 1,490 to 1,090 units. We also see a decline in companies: by 4.8%, from 681 to 648 units.
The market is largely dominated by leasing, which accounts for almost two-thirds (62.2%). Private individuals account for 23.7% of the market, while companies account for 14.1%.
