Copenhagen to reward environmentally conscious tourists

The Danish capital, Copenhagen, wants to raise tourists’ awareness of the need to travel more sustainably. This summer, the city will again use generous incentives to encourage guests to travel and sightsee more sustainably.

In response to the climate crisis and general world overtourism, last year’s CopenPay campaign will be extended with more discount offers and a focus on train travellers. In addition, holidaymakers are to be encouraged to travel less but to stay longer.

Generous incentives

Tourists will be encouraged to come by train and stay longer than four days. Billboards and social media will inform them.

In return, they will receive free bicycle rides, yoga lessons, guided tours, or reduced admission prices for some of the city’s biggest attractions. The initiative was launched in 2024 and tested on a small scale, but is now being rolled out widely.

“Tourism is a major contributor to CO2 emissions, which is why it became necessary to encourage visitors to make more environmentally friendly choices,” explained Søren Tegen Pedersen, head of Wonderful Copenhagen.

The campaign will start on June 17th and last nine weeks. Ninety locations will participate, including the national museum and the Copenhill ski slope.
