Since last week, Belgian car owners have been able to receive their official invitation for the obligatory car inspection in their eBox, an official and secure electronic mailbox used by the government.
Until now, invitations to present your car (older than four years) for official inspection in one of the agreed inspection centers were mainly sent by post, sometimes via e-mail or SMS. With the integration of eBox, the government wants to simplify things and reduce paper waste.
Technical centers overcrowded
The car owner has to do nothing except check his eBox when he receives a message from the authorities. He can then make an appointment at the technical inspection center of his choice. The latter can be more difficult than expected, as there are long waiting lists in almost all inspection centers.
People who get the invitation are advised to make an appointment as soon as possible. That’s why the Flemish government has decided to make the yearly inspection bi-annual, but that hasn’t been implemented yet.
eBox
The official eBox is a digital platform that the Belgian government provides to all citizens. It allows them to securely receive and check their official messages and invitations.
A growing number of public services use it. The purpose is clear: a more efficient public service with less bureaucracy and administrative complication. It’s unclear how many Belgians have activated their eBox, but the number is still growing.
