Brussels tries ‘Kiss & Cycle’ to tame the school run

Brussels Mobility is launching a pilot project in Forest to test a dedicated “Kiss & Cycle” zone for parents dropping their children off at school using cargo bikes, long tails, trailer bikes, or other exceptionally large bicycles.

The special strip aims to reduce the chaos often seen on sidewalks and streets during school drop-off times, as more urban parents turn to cargo bikes and similar alternatives. The project will be evaluated, with a possible wider rollout expected this autumn.

Flexible parking lot

The first Kiss & Cycle zone is being set up at the French-language school Nos Enfants in Forest. It occupies an alternate parking zone on Avenue Albert, near house number 244. A dedicated traffic sign will clearly mark the space.

This is a first for the Brussels Region. The sign indicates that between 8 and 9 a.m., the parking spot is reserved for cyclists. Outside those hours, it reverts to a standard (paid) car parking space.

Interest is high

The pilot project will undergo an initial evaluation before the summer holidays, with a second review planned for the autumn.

Other municipalities have already expressed strong interest, according to Brussels Mobility, suggesting there is a real possibility the system could be expanded across the capital.

In 2023, 7,415 electric cargo bikes and 7,821 electric long-tail bikes were sold in Belgium, an increase of 2% and 4%, respectively.
