New speed pedelecs increasingly leased, second-hand market booms

The number of new speed pedelecs sold in May decreased by 13.4%, cumulated over 5 months, the regression is just 3.7%. Second-hand ones, on the contrary, are increasingly popular, with a 17.1% increase compared to May last year.

Filip Rylant, spokesman of mobility federation Traxio: “The registrations of new speed pedelecs are fluctuating less than last year, with a spectacular increase of leasing in the market share (61.5%). In contrast, second-hand buyers are mainly individual buyers who purchase speed pedelecs when the leasing contract has ended.”

Between 2023 and 2025, the share of second-hand buyers increased from 26.8% to 38.5%. Traxio expects the number of speed pedelecs to grow in the coming months, as federal employees and educational personnel now also have access to leasing formulas.

New market dominated by leasing

During the first five months of 2025, the vast majority of newly registered speed pedelecs are situated in the leasing segment. 61.5% of all new contracts are in leasing, 24.7% are individual buyers, and companies purchase 13.8%.

Those leased bikes appear on the second-hand market after a few years as more affordable second-hand bikes. It benefits less financially strong buyers and improves the sustainability of bikes as a circular product.
