BYD is leveling up the game for electric buses once again. After presenting the B12 at Busworld Europe 2023 in Brussels, the first model with a Blade Battery integrated into the chassis, the Chinese manufacturer has now unveiled the B13.b at the UITP Summit in Hamburg. This low-entry 13-meter electric intercity bus surpasses the B12 with a range of up to 700 km on a single charge.
BYD is quickly becoming a dominant player in the global electric bus market. In 2024, the Chinese manufacturer exported nearly 3,600 electric buses, primarily to Europe. In total, over 6,700 BYD buses have been ordered in Europe, including from Flemish public transport company De Lijn.
More space for passengers and a lot more range
Now, BYD is further asserting its dominance in terms of electric efficiency with the B13.b. It’s a low-entry intercity bus with a capacity of up to 78 passengers, serving as the successor to the BYD B13, which can accommodate up to 70 people.

But the most dramatic increase has been the driving range: whereas the old B13 managed up to 450 km from its 422 kWh battery, the B13.b can drive up to 700 km on a single charge. This is thanks to the Blade Battery Chassis platform, which integrates BYD’s high-capacity and safer LFP cells directly into the chassis, creating extra space and increasing torsional rigidity.
Increased efficiency
Two battery options are available: 560 kWh for the ultimate 700-km range figure, or 476 kWh for a still very usable range of up to 620 km. Charging is possible up to 2 x 192 kW, or up to 500 kW using a trolleybus-style pantograph. Top speed is limited to 100 km/h, making the BYD B13.b suitable for long-distance and highway use.
Two 150 kW hub motors generate power, while BYD’s 6-in-1 silicon carbide (SiC) controller further enhances efficiency. Other features include an active suspension to improve ride quality and onboard comfort.

Ahead of the pack?
Compared to the competition, BYD seems to have the advantage, at least in terms of efficiency and range. Daimler’s Mercedes eIntouro electric intercity bus achieves a range of only up to 500 km on a 414 kWh charge. Volvo’s 8900 Electric has a similar 540 kWh battery capacity to the BYD B13.b, but the Swedish manufacturer does not disclose range.
