Family pocketed €1,500 a time in massive driving test ‘earphone’ scam

The federal judicial police in Halle-Vilvoorde have arrested three members of the same family from Sint-Pieters-Leeuw who organized large-scale fraud in the theoretical driving test.

Research shows that family members helped candidates obtain their theoretical driving licenses fraudulently. One of the suspects had already been arrested in 2023 for similar crimes.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the suspects continued to operate in the same way. With an ingenious ‘earphone system’, they helped desperate people get their driver’s licenses and collected hundreds of thousands of euros themselves.

‘Assistance’

The candidate drivers taking their exams were given earphones and a mini-modem through which the criminal gang could listen to the exam questions and provide the correct answers. They charged around 1,500 euros for this ‘assistance’.

The fraudulent exams are said to have taken place in various exam centers in Anderlecht, Schaarbeek, Couillet, Deurne, Huy, Cuesmes, Braine-le-Comte, and Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve.

Research shows that the organization helped candidates obtain their theoretical driving license several times a week and sometimes even several times a day. They allegedly earned hundreds of thousands of euros this way.

‘Customers’

Several ‘customers’ have already been identified, including one person who had previously been sentenced to a long-term driving ban and was required to retake his theory test. Further investigation will help to identify other fraudsters. In the meantime, the arrested family members were placed under arrest warrant by the investigating judge.
