Canadian aviation training provider CAE plans to close its training center at Brussels Airport by the end of this year. This is reported by the business newspaper De Tijd. Due to declining demand, outdated simulators, and structural losses, 22 of the 27 jobs are at risk.<\/p>\n

CAE Brussels is the direct successor to the historic Sabena Flight Academy, founded in 1953 as the Belgian civil aviation school. As the closure goes ahead, a piece of Belgian aviation history will be lost.<\/p>\n

Loss-making<\/h4>\n

“Our costs are structurally too high compared to the revenue we generate,” says the company, which is based in Steenokkerzeel. The decision comes after years of declining performance.<\/p>\n

After Sabena’s bankruptcy in 2001, the flight school remained active, was sold to former Sabena managers in 2004, and was finally acquired in 2008 by the Canadian group CAE – one of the world’s largest aviation training providers. \u00a0Pilots from Brussels Airlines and TUI complete their type rating or recurrent training there, while easyJet also uses it regularly for the theoretical phase of its cadet program.<\/p>\n

While the site was still profitable in 2024, it recently turned to operating at a loss, and an even larger deficit is expected for the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n

“CAE Brussels operates on a limited scale; in the long term, there is no longer sufficient demand for training on various simulators, nor any revenue prospects to continue supporting operations at this location,” according to De Tijd, citing an internal document.<\/p>\n

Declining demand for training courses<\/h4>\n

Several factors are contributing to the impending closure. TUI fly, which already has training facilities in Amsterdam and D\u00fcsseldorf, suspended its 2026 cadet program, leading to a sharp decline in training demand.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Brussels Airlines opened a brand-new training center in Vilvoorde in 2024 in partnership with Lufthansa Aviation Training, reducing its reliance on CAE Brussels. Plus: Brussels Airlines already trains its cadets through Skywings Flight Training, the largest flight school in Deurne, Antwerp, while that flight school also permanently moved all touch-and-go flights (landing, briefly touching the ground, and taking off again) to Spain at the end of December.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, modern Level D simulators for aircraft types such as the A320, A330, and B737 are expensive to upgrade, which is barely profitable for a small center like CAE Brussels.<\/p>\n

Restructuring of the European training network<\/h4>\n

On April 8, CAE Brussels initiated the statutory consultation process with its employees, a first step toward a possible closure of its technical training operations in Brussels.<\/p>\n

The news comes as a surprise to the unions, says Paul Blondeel of ACV-Metea. CAE emphasizes that it wants to minimize the impact and that employees can apply for other positions within the group.<\/p>\n

CAE employs approximately 13,000 people across some 240 locations in more than 40 countries. The main strategic hubs in Europe are Amsterdam, Madrid, Frankfurt, Bordeaux, Milan, London, Oslo, Prague, Athens, and Copenhagen.<\/p>\n

Like Brussels, the offices in Barcelona and Stockholm are currently under pressure or are part of the restructuring plan to increase the efficiency of the European network.<\/p>\n

The company is headquartered in Montreal and generated revenue of over 1,2 billion dollars in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026, with an order backlog of more than 19,6 billion dollars.<\/p>\n

CAE is cutting about 280 jobs worldwide – roughly 2% of its workforce – in response to economic uncertainty and supply chain issues in the commercial aviation sector.
