After years of financial turbulence, the Californian charging giant ChargePoint is clawing back. Its return to form starts with a standalone post that redraws the boundaries of what a single-cabinet EV charger can do.<\/p>\n
The electric vehicle charging industry has a habit of measuring progress in numbers that rapidly become obsolete. A hundred kilowatts was special once. Then two hundred. Then three-fifty. This week, ChargePoint,\u00a0 the Californian operator that spent much of the last two years rebuilding itself after a bruising financial restructuring, matched the line at six hundred.<\/p>\n
That number doesn\u2019t rewrite the rulebook in itself. But there\u2019s a special feature in the specs. The Express Solo from ChargePoint is the world’s fastest standalone EV charger for mass-market passenger vehicles. At up to 600 kW to a single vehicle, delivered from a single cabinet, it is a significant piece of engineering.<\/p>\n
The Express Solo is the first product in a completely new Express DC fast charging architecture. The unit achieves approximately 40% higher power density than comparable DC fast-charging hardware, which makes a practical difference. The locations most needed for fast charging in Europe – urban fuel stations, retail car parks, motorway services with aging electrical infrastructure – are precisely the locations where rival multi-cabinet systems frequently cannot be installed. The Express Solo fits where they cannot.<\/p>\n
In its base configuration, the unit serves two vehicles simultaneously, allocating its 600 kW dynamically based on each vehicle’s actual capacity. Add a second dispenser, and that brings the total to four vehicles. Crucially, it supports direct DC inputs: on-site solar panels and battery storage can feed the charger directly, reducing or eliminating the need for an upgraded grid connection. For site operators faced with long waits for distribution network capacity, that is not a minor detail.<\/p>\n
Connector compatibility covers both CCS and NACS through ChargePoint’s Omni Port system, so the charger is built for both continents and can handle their standards without hardware modification. That\u2019s new as well: this is the first DC fast charger ChargePoint is bringing to both North America and Europe simultaneously.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The company already operates across 12 European countries, but its DC fast-charging portfolio in Europe has lagged its North American footprint. Specific European deployment timelines have not been confirmed.<\/p>\n However, the European market the company is entering is not waiting. Ionity\u2019s current network peaks at 400 kW per port. But since last year, it has been rolling out the Alpitronic HYC1000, a megawatt-capable system that matches the Express Solo’s 600 kW per port and reaches 1,000 kW total across up to eight simultaneous connections.<\/p>\n And then there is BYD. The Chinese manufacturer used the European launch of its Denza brand in Paris earlier this month to announce that its Flash Charging network, hardware capable of up to 1,500 kW through on-site Blade Battery storage, will also be deployed in Europe with 2,000 units as a start.<\/p>\n Whether 600 kW is a ceiling or a waypoint depends on whom you ask.
